DmThe royal banners forward go,
Cthe cross shines forth in mystic glow;
Bbwhere He in flesh, our flesh Who made,
Aour sentence bore, our ransom paid.
DmThere whilst He hung, His sacred side
Cby soldier's spear was opened wide,
Bbto cleanse us in the precious flood
Aof water mingled with His blood.
DmFulfilled is now what David told
Cin true prophetic song of old,
Bbhow God the heathen's King should be;
Afor God is reigning from the tree.
DmO tree of glory, tree most fair,
Cordained those holy limbs to bear,
Bbhow bright in purple robe it stood,
Athe purple of a Saviour's blood!
DmUpon its arms, like balance true,
CHe weighed the price for sinners due,
Bbthe price which none but He could pay,
Aand spoiled the spoiler of his prey.
DmTo Thee, eternal Three in One,
Clet homage meet by all be done:
Bbas by the cross Thou dost restore,
Aso rule and guide us evermore. Amen.
